SpaceWire Cable Description

Utilize SpaceWire to communicate with European Space Agency and NASA equipment utilizing the ECSS-E-ST-50-12C specification. SpaceWire is configured using routers to create a heirarchical point-to-point system with high speed parallel paths.

SpaceWire nodes are interconnected with SpaceWire cable. Standard cables have TX/RX pairs reversed to tie SIN/DIN to SOUT/DOUT. Options include: straight through cables, reversed male/female, mixed connectors, and connector plating. In addition client specific SpaceWire breakout cables are designed and manufactured.

There are two wiring standards - Type A and Type AL [Legacy]. The main difference between the two is how the shielding is handled. WIth the newer Type A cable, pin3 is left open and the inner shields are tied together and to the outer shield. With the Type AL cable, pin 3 is used as a local ground reference for the Tx side inner shields. The Rx side is left open. In both types the outer shield is tied to the connectors at both ends.

SpaceWire cables are manufactured with special cable providing the unique shielding, cable lay length, capacitance, inductance, and frequency response requirements of SpaceWire. Standard lengths are stocked with client specific lengths custom manufactured. Custom lengths can typically be built within 1-3 weeks.

MDM style connectors are standard.

All cables are Hipot and continuity tested

If your situation demands a custom application we will create a new drawing to meet your requirements. A pin diagram, detailed description or other documentation is usually sufficient to create the cable drawing. email us your requirements.

The standard timing uses the data and strobe to transmit and to receive the data. The data is transmitted as a command or data. The strobe provides the transitions for clocking when the data is unchanged between adjacent bit times.

SpaceWire Cable Features

Length
Multiple Lengths stocked. Custom sizes built to order. See ordering information to build your own part number
Transmit Speeds
Cables are tested for multiple frequencies including the current end points of 10 and 200 MHz. Some custom lengths - much longer than 10m have reduced top frequencies.
Labeling
Cables are labeled near each connector and at the center. Each cable has a unique serial number and test documentation.
Plating
Option for Nickel plated connectors.
Male/female
Option for Socket at P1 and or P2 [Pin at both ends is standard]
Standard / Straight Through
Standard wiring is "Null Modem" with TX and RX pairs reversed within the cable. SIN/DIN connected to SOUT/DOUT. Straight through wiring is an option to use for cable extension or panel mount purposes. Usually ordered with the Female connector on one side to facilitate.
Signaling
SpaceWire LVDS levels are compatible with SpaceWire Cable.

Specialized SpaceWire Cable

SCSI to SpaceWire with one channel connected
When using the PMC SpaceWire on an X1 type carrier - PCIeBPMCX1, PCIBPMCX1 etc., All or some of the SpaceWire IO can be routed to the rear of the carrier. Dynamic Engineering has designed a modified SpaceWire cable which allows 1-4 SpaceWire connections from the carrier to be connected to our standard SpaceWire cable and connectors.
