PMC-MC-X4-RIO adapter, carrier, motherboard provides the ability to install up to 4 (four) PMC modules into a small enclosure. PMC-MC-X4-RIO has two PMC card positions top and bottom to create a compact arrangement with 4 PMC positions. X4 is a complete solution with built in power supplies, thermal protection, voltage monitoring, bus arbitration, clock distribution, fan control and more. Compact chassis available to house PMC-MC-X4-RIO.
Referenced to 10-40V " expanded 28V" range PMC-MC-X4-RIO provides power supplies for +5, +3.3, +12, and minus 12. The 12V supply is buck-boost to allow operating at voltages below 12V and still have12V regulated power. The standard "Power Din 4" connector is used for the input to the X4 when using the PMC-MC-X4-RIO Chassis. For embedding into your equipment the optional Molex vertical connector is recommended. With the chassis version, a wall mount transformer supply is provided. With the "RIO" version, the input power reference is used to generate the 4 PMC rails directly. The 3.3 and 5V supplies can source 15A. The +12V and -12V are 4A supplies.
The power supplies are tied to an optional header to allow other co-located assets to use the X4 generated power. For example, one client uses PMC-MC-X4 along with PrPMC, and interface PMC to control a laser. The OPB connector was used to source the power required for the laser saving a power supply requirement from the system.
PCI VIO is programmable allowing 5V or 3.3V PMCs to be used. The voltage select pins are not installed [the keying holes are provided] on PMC-MC-X4-RIO. Many PMCs are "universal" and can work with 3.3 or 5V PCI backplanes. The DIPSWITCH selects 5V or 3V operation. The Silk-Screen incorporates a legend with the DIP switch options.
The PCI bus is suitable for 32 and 64 bit operation at 33 or 66 MHz. Alternate clock frequencies can be supported by special request. Each of the slots including Slot 0 has a request and grant connection to the arbiter located within the CPLD. The CPLD also provides a selectable 66/33 MHz reference clock routed to each of the positions. The reference clock is buffered with a "zero delay" buffer and matched length routed to each of the PMC slots. Interrupts are routed from Slots 1, 2, and 3 to slot 0. IDSEL address range is selectable via the DIPSWITCH. Reset is based on supervisor circuits checking that the 3.3V and 5V rails are valid or the reset option from the DIPSWITCH. Slots 0,1,2 and 3 are clearly marked in the silk-screen.
PrPMCs frequently have concentrated power consumption requiring air flow for proper cooling. The larger load also puts a thermal load on the PMC-MC-X4-RIO components. The X4 was designed to accomodate convection cooling. The slots in the side of the PMC-MC-X4-RIO design are for fans. [Please refer to the pictures above.] PMC-MC-X4-RIO has temperature controlled power [+12V] for fans. The -RIO model has 40 mm 12V fan cutouts for improved sound levels.
The
PMC-MC-X4-RIO Chassis comes with twin fans making use of the cutouts. The X4 chassis comes with grids on both sides to provide for proper air flow across the PMCs and PMC-MC-X4-RIO. Please refer to the picture of the open X4 chassis toward the bottom of the
PMC-MC-X4-RIO-Chassis page.
Pn4 IO from each PMC position is routed to VHDCI connectors mounted to the rear of PMC-MC-X4-RIO. Matched length [.001"], impedance controlled differential routing is provided. Please see the manual for the connection definitions. The shield on each of the VHDCI connectors can be AC, DC or open coupled to ground for the cable shield reference. A header is provided to make the selection.
Standard or Remote mode is supported. Using the DIPSWITCH select the Remote mode to receive a clock from an external source and to use an external second level of arbitration. A net of 3 PMC positions are available in this configuration as position 0 is used for the cable between the host system and the X4 acting as an expansion chassis. Initial testing was performed with an
Extendio II . PMC-Parallel-GPIO are used to run DMA tests on multiple positions in parallel plus do standard target IO accesses.
The original PMC-MC-X4 is available to support projects already through T&I. PMC-MC-X4-RIO is recommended for new designs. Please note: PMC-MC-X4 and PMC-MC-X4-RIO have different mounting points and are not interchangeable unless this is taken into account.
