Peripheral Component Interconnect Express or PCIe, PCIexpress etc. is a serial interconnect system with bidirectional, and potentially parallel traffic at high speeds. Signalling is encoded for error checking and line loading. There are 3 "Gens" fairly widely in use at this time.

Gen1 operates at 2.5 GT/S. Since 8b/10b encoding is used 2 GT/S are actually available for data and tokens. Since it is a serial link this means 250 MB/S is the theoretical maximum. This number will be reduced based on the link control overhead which is a function of the size the payloads transferred. Larger gets you closer to max bandwidth. PCI 32/33 max bandwidth is 128 MB/s for comparison. A single lane PCIe interface properly designed will out perform a standard PCI interface. Gen 2 is twice as fast per lane due to a higher speed transfer, also using 8b/10b. Gen 3 runs twice as fast due to a different encoding scheme 128b/130b which reduces the encoding overhead from 20% to approximately 1.5%, and higher clock rate.

PCIe is the heir apparent to PCI bus based systems. PCI was incorporated into PC´s, PC104, cPCI, PMC, and many other system types. PCIe is now making inroads with parallel platform types XMC for PMC, PCIe104 for PCI-104, VPX for VME, cPCIe for cPCI, as well as taking over in the PC arena. Dynamic Engineering is developing products for the new platforms and will continue to develop to support the previous generation of PCI based systems. In addition Dynamic Engineering supports cross mounted systems, PMC in PCIe with PCIeBPMCX1, or IP on PCIe with PCIe3IP for example.

Dynamic Engineering currenly supports PCIe based systems with a combination of adapters/carriers and IO solutions. Carriers for PMC, XMC, IP to use with PCIe. Native IO solutions for HOTLink, custom IO, and adapter based solutions with SpaceWire, CAN, 1553, 429, Parallel and serial IO, custom requirements.

PCIe Specification Compatibility Dynamic Engineering Carriers and Modules are compliant per the PCI-SIG specification for PCIe plus any secondary specification; for example Vita 46 which is VPX.

Dynamic Engineering driver and application software supports the user. Our carrier drivers support system enumeration and access to the modules. Dynamic Engineering modules have feature rich support for the HW and reference application SW to show examples of how to use those features. PCIeBiSerialDB37 is PCI Express native with 1-4 lanes used. The DB37 connector is mounted to allow cabling directly to the rear port of the PC. DB37 connectors allow for a variety of wiring - twisted pair, twin-ax, ribbon etc. PCIeBiSerialDb37 can be configured with RS-485/RS-422, LVDS or both types of IO. Each IO is individually programmable for direction and termination. All IO are matched length and impedance controlled from the FPGA to the connector cable mounting plane to allow for any client requirement: Full Duplex, Half-Duplex, Parallel, Serial, multi-channel etc. The hardware is optimized with "Channelized DMA"™ to allow for efficient data movement to and from the host memory. Software

Software Support for Dynamic Engineering PCIe Modules and Carriers typically includes Drivers and reference Applications for Windows®, VxWorks, and Linux.

Most carriers are transparent to the SW and do not require anything special. In some cases an installed device will need to modify the settings in the bridge/switch on the carrier to support special operations or faster DMA. Dynamic Engineering PMC/XMC drivers handle this function.

In general the driver is layered with a base level and a port level. The driver supports enumeration of the HW and then passes control to the base. The base calls each of the port/channel drivers and assigns memory etc. Once operating the base level driver is used to control global assets of the card and the port drivers the specific features of each port. In some cases - PCIeAlteraCycloneIV for example, a generic driver is available to support client installed features not covered by the supplied driver. Please see the Driver manuals for the specifics of each type. Each product has a separate manual for each OS package supported. The manuals are available for download on each product data page.

Drivers and Reference SW are developed for each type / version of Module implemented. When custom versions are ordered the NRE will include providing Windows, Linux, and/or VxWorks packages. For off-the-shelf models, select on the manuals tab, the Windows® and Linux SW shown is included with your purchase of the HW. A small one-time charge is required for the VxWorks versions. Unsupported SW versions may have an NRE requirement.
