IndustryPack Description

IndustryPack® Modules and carriers are an important part of solutions for Embedded situations. IndustryPack Modules have many advantages. When you consider the small size and inherant rugged design against other formats, IP Modules can be the right choice. IP´s are ideal for small size functions and the need to supply multiple functions in a small space. IP Modules are small enough to allow 2 to fit where 1 PMC would go and yet large enough to support an FPGA and IO. Frequenty IP Modules are less expensive than PMC or XMC Modules. Carriers for IP Modules are available in most bus formats; PCI, PCIe, cPCI, PCI-104, PCI-104, VPX and others. Consider IP´s for your next project.

Like VME, IP Modules have been around a long time. Dynamic Engineering has been involved from the beginnning; working on the specifications and helping to add 32 MHz operation as consultants to GreenSpring Computers. Dynamic Engineering also designed multiple of the IP Modules and carriers which GreenSpring Marketed. Examples include the first PCI based IP carrier, Platform 332, IP-Ethernet, mechanical design for RackMac various models, IP-Synchro, and more.

Dynamic Engineering pioneered maximizing throughput on the PCI bus to the module with the original PCI3IP and PCI5IP models. 32 bit PCI accesses converted to 16 bit for the IP module with controls to allow for multiple writes to one location, and advancing addresses. With new technology additional features are now included in IP Modules and carriers. With PCIe3IP 64 bit accesses are now supported as the PCIe bus handles larger target access payloads than the PCI bus. With 64 bit accesses the overhead per access is greatly reduced. See the expanded writeup on the carrier pages. In addition IP Modules can be outfit with much larger FPGA´s meaning more complex function and more storage available. For example IP-BiSerial-VI has a Spartan VI FPGA and 24 differential transceivers allowing a wide range of solutions for LVDS or 485 based systems. The orignial IP-BiSerial featured a Spartan 40 and was very limited in comparison.

Dynamic Engineering is committed to long term solutions of all sorts for our clients. As long as we can get the parts we can make more and in many cases a simple design around can happen for something that went obsolete. In the past few months the cariers PCIe3IP and PCIe5IP were launched, several IP modules were revamped to use newer parts and provide the same function in a SW transparent manner, plus brand new IP-BiSerial-VI was released and has already had 2 custom client designs implemented complete with Windows, Linux and VxWorks software packages. IP Specification Compatibility Dynamic Engineering Carriers and Modules are compliant per the VITA 4 - 1995 specification. All Dynamic Engineering IP Modules are compatible with the PCIe3IP, PCIe5IP, VPXI2IP, PCI3IP, PCI5IP, cPCI2IP, cPCI4IP, PC104pIP etc. Dynamic Engineering IP Modules will operate with any IP specification compliant carrier board, and Dynamic Engineering Carriers will work with any IP Specification compliant module board.

Dynamic Engineering driver and application software supports the user. Our carrier drivers support system enumeration and access to the modules. The drivers also support third party modules without a specific module driver. Dynamic Engineering modules have feature rich support for the HW and reference application SW to show examples of how to use those features. IndustryPack® Modules require a "carrier" in most cases to adapt them to the system. Dynamic Engineering has carrier solutions for a variety of formats.
PCIe implementations can be done with the PCIe3IP and PCIe5IP.

Software

Software Support for Dynamic Engineering IP Modules and Carriers typically includes Drivers and reference Applications for Windows® , VxWorks, and Linux.

In general the IP driver is layered and operates on top of the Carrier driver. IP drivers are auto installed for each instance detected. A generic driver is available for detected IP modules without a specific driver. This feature makes it easy to use a 3rd party IP module with a Dynamic Engineering Carrier. Please see the Driver manuals for the specifics of each type. Each product has a separate manual for each OS package supported. The manuals are available for download on each product data page.

Drivers and Reference SW are developed for each type / version of IP Module implemented. When custom versions are ordered the NRE will include providing Windows, Linux, and/or VxWorks packages. For off-the-shelf models, select on the manuals tab, the Windows® and Linux SW shown is included with your purchase of the HW. A small one-time charge is required for the VxWorks versions. Unsupported SW versions may have an NRE requirement.

The Linux driver is a bus driver capable of supporting multiple (up to 64) Industry Pack buses/carrier cards. This driver interfaces with the ipack-core Open Source code to support Industry Pack devices. This Open Source code has been slightly modified, and is included with the tar-ball for this driver.

A generic IPACK driver (ipack_gen) and user library (libipack) has been developed by Dynamic Engineering. This driver and library may be sufficient for developing user space drivers for a device depending upon the complexity of that device. Other device specific user libraries and kernel drivers are available for Dynamic Engineering Industry Pack modules. The diagram above illustrates possible layering of Industry Pack components:
